Bonds Q & A

What is bonding?

During bonding, Dr. Shahriari applies a putty-like plastic material to a discolored, damaged, or otherwise problematic area in your mouth. Dr. Shahriari mixes the bonding material to match the color of your teeth, creating the most natural look possible.

Bonding is an alternative to veneers or crowns, and therefore it's used in many of the same situations. Common uses for bonding include:

  • Repair of chipped teeth
  • Closing gaps between front teeth
  • Lengthening teeth
  • Reshaping teeth

Bonding is mainly used for cosmetic reasons, although it does add some extra strength to your teeth as well.

How does the bonding process work?

After Dr. Shahriari chooses the ideal color match for your tooth, she lightly roughens the tooth surface. She then adds a thin layer of liquid adhesive to your tooth surface.

Dr. Shahriari places the bonding material on your tooth and then shapes and smooths it into the desired appearance. To harden the bonding material, Dr. Shahriari exposes it to controlled UV light.

With the bonding material hardened, Dr. Shahriari does any final shaping and smoothing that's needed, and then polishes it to match the surrounding teeth. The entire process takes less than an hour in most cases.

Is there any downtime after bonding?

No, there's no downtime after bonding. You can go back to work whenever you like. You'll have very few restrictions other than using caution while eating for the first couple days.

Bonding material can stain easily in the first couple of days, so avoid any dark or brightly colored drinks or food during that time.

How long does bonding last?

Bonding can last for about 10 years, especially if you take good care of your teeth. Brush and floss carefully every day, and see Dr. Shahriari for checkups on the recommended schedule to maintain your new teeth bonding in the best possible way.

If you want to improve your smile in an affordable way, bonding might be a great option. It's typically less expensive than veneers and crowns, and it can correct a wide variety of cosmetic teeth concerns. Use online booking or call one of the Mirror Cosmetic Dentistry offices to schedule your bonding consultation with Dr. Shahriari now.
